BUILDING DESIGN PORTFOLIOS

Sara Eisenman

Introduction - pgs 9-11
Portfolios have changed overtime, starting from simply type specimen sheets to assist customers and have evolved as designers started to work independently in the twentieth century. They are a personal presentation of the designer, represented by both the portfolio itself and the work inside of it.
"In the end, the perfectly designed system for displaying your talent will reflect you, your interests, your design skills, and your unique creativity."

Making a Working Portfolio - pgs 13-23
Key points to keep in mind:
-Approach the design as if I am the subject
-Consider the audience I am going to address
-Container is secondary to content
-Design extra pieces to stand out
-Take time to create samples in my area of interest
-Extra effort demonstrates enthusiasm and initiative
-Show how I problem solve
-Show wide range of design
-Show what interests me
-Design range can overlap between disciplines
-Cohesive whole
-An employer is not just going to decide if I can create quality design, but I am reliable, hard working, have initiative and that I am competent.
-Show process
-Enlighten and engage
-Show good design solutions

I need to be thinking
about who I want to work for and what kind of design I want to do. If I want to work for a restaurant, they will be more interested in seeing samples of successful design work. If I want to work with other designers, a creative director wants to know how I think and arrive at my solutions.

BECOMING A GRAPHIC DESIGNER - 3rd Edition
Heller & Fernandes

Preface - pgs 7-9
Graphic design takes time and intense experience in order to understand the language and to gain skills that set us apart from people that are simply only technical. We all serve a client and it is important to ask ourselves what they expect and how we can meet those expectations.
"What do you want from a field that offers so much but requires a lot in return?"

So You Want to Become a Graphic Designer - pgs 10-23
Knowledge is key to saving time and energy. We must learn at much about the profession as possible and dedicate our time and energy towards learning and experimenting, embraced body and soul.
Graphic design is used widely in advertising and commercial art. However, it is not void of creative space, nor does it diminish the noun "art".
